The standard business card size is 3.5 inches by 2.0 inches. This is the size for which most business card holders, wallets and other business card accessories cater. It is therefore important that you conform to these measurements so that your business cards look professional and are easy to store and carry around.
It is possible to have cards smaller than this, but probably not a good idea to make them larger as they would be too cumbersome to store and carry around.
If you do not have the time or design skills to design your own business card then it may be a good idea to use a professional printer.
With savings like that it is definitely worth considering using a professional printer.
The standard card dimensions are shown below with descriptions to assist you:
Standard business card size: 3.5 × 2 inches. This is the size to which the finished card is trimmed.
Safe area: 3.25 x 1.75 inches. This is the area in which all your important information should appear. Generally, there should not be any writing beyond this area. Otherwise you risk having your name or phone number trimmed off.
Bleed: this is the outermost part of the card shown in white in the diagram above. The bleed is the extra bit of colour information beyond the finished size of the card. It is necessary due to cutting variations and helps to give a smooth and straight appearance to the card when cut.
In summary: The size of the card you design should be 2.125 by 3.625 inches. This will be trimmed to 3.5 × 2 inches (8.89 cm x 5.08 cm) which is the standard business card measurement. Ensure that your text is within the safe area (3.25 x 1.75 inches).
These measurements can be interchanged if you want to have a vertical card layout rather than a horizontal one. Then the height becomes 3.5 inches and the width 2 inches.
All the best with your card design.
